| 16 Ks for Gibson, Beats Charleston 5-1 Saturday, July 10th, 1999 Everything was working for Kyle Gibson today at Battle Kings Ballpark. He had the perfect delivery. The ball was moving. The fastball was working.
In an unforgettable performance, the 26-year-old Gibson fanned 16 Riverdogs and sparked the Rancho Cucamonga Headhunters to a 5-1 victory over Charleston. He left Riverdogs hitters mumbling and muttering at the plate. And when he needed a strikeout, he got it.
"I don't know if there are many times that I've seen him throw better," said Rancho Cucamonga manager Frank Tanana. "His location and command were really something."
In addition to collecting 16 strikeouts over 9 innings, Gibson allowed 6 hits and 1 walk in a superlative outing.
"I thought I'd make it easy on the guys today," Gibson said with a smile.
Gibson has taken the mound for no relief appearances this season, nailing down no saves while notching a 6-3 record with a 1.84 ERA. The Rancho Cucamonga reliever has limited opposing batters to a .174 batting average.
