| 1B Gainer Lights Up Black Aces for 5 RBIs as Pilgrims Tie Challenger Round | The Boston Pilgrims relied on the hitting of designated hitter Del Gainer to get by the Houston Black Aces, 9-5, in Game 2 of the Challenger Round today. For the game, Gainer went 3 for 4 with 3 doubles and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5. The clubs are now tied, 1-1.
Billy Werber, who finished 2nd in the PBL in doubles with 46 last year, aided the Boston cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the third baseman went 2 for 6 with 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI.
"Odds are I won't have another 5-RBI game in the playoffs ever again," Gainer said later. "So I'm going to savor this."
The next game is scheduled for Monday, October 11th, 1999. The scheduled starters for the game are Johnny Cueto for the Boston Pilgrims and Arlie Pond for the the Houston Black Aces.
