Stars Foil Padres, 6-5 | The 6-5 Philadelphia win over San Diego was due in large part to Conor Jackson. The Stars left fielder went 3 for 5 with a home run and a double. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Reliever Willie Powell picked up the win. His record improves to 3-2. Phil Leftwich took the loss. George Sharrott was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 6 of 7 save opportunities.
The Padres had been locked in a 5-5 tie with the Stars going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the 29-year old right fielder Orlando Merced came to the plate. Merced hit a run-scoring double on a 1-1 changeup from San Diego hurler Phil Leftwich. It was Merced's 13th double of the year.
In postgame comments to the Philadelphia Bulletin, Jackson said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
The Stars are now 59-63, while the Padres fall to 47-75. | | | | |
