New York Downs Pittsburgh, 6-5 | The New York Yankees knocked off the Pittsburgh Ambassadors, 6-5, at Allegheny Park. Harry Bemis was a big reason New York won. The catcher was 4-4 with 3 doubles. He scored 2 runs. Reliever Andy Hassler picked up the win. His record improves to 6-2. Chuck Estrada took the loss. Bob Locker got the save, his 18th in 19 chances.
It could have been a different outcome for New York, had it not been for Wally Berger, the 29-year old center fielder . Berger contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the ninth inning to put New York up, 6-5.
"It's nice to come out on top today," said Berger.
With the victory, the Yankees upped their record to 77-65. | | | | |
