Pivotal Game 5 Goes to Host Yankees, 3-0 | A strong performance from pitcher Hal Newhouser was not enough for the Tampon Bay Pussies, who were stopped by the visiting New York Yankees, 3-0, in Game 5 of the Challenger Round. The Yankees never truly figured out the left-handed Newhouser, who threw 7 innings of shutout ball. Still, the Yankees now hold a 3-2 in the best-of-7 series.
Had Wally Berger not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Berger hit a 3-run home run. That made the score 3-0, in favor of the Yankees.
"We put together a nice win," Berger said.
Game 6 is scheduled for Friday, October 15th, 1999 in Tampa. The scheduled starters for the game are Denny McLain for New York and Paul Derringer for Tampon Bay. | | | | |
