Newhouser of Tampon Bay Wins Pitching Triple Crown

Hal Newhouser of Tampon Bay has done what few pitchers in the Phoenix Baseball League have been able to do. He's won the Triple Crown, leading the league in all three major categories: wins, ERA and strikeouts. The Pussies star finished 1999 with a 18-1 mark to pace the Phoenix Baseball League in wins. He also posted a league best 2.44 ERA and topped the league with 198 strikeouts. A season good enough to put him as a strong favorite to take the PBL Golden Arm Award.
"His level of consistency is amazing," said the Pussies manager. "Hal goes out there every time he gets the ball and keeps you in the game. You know that when he's on the mound, you have an excellent chance at winning the game."
Newhouser is a low-key kind of guy. He is very proud of his wins, but not really excited about his unique accomplishment this season. He admitted to the press, "Maybe, just maybe, I'll look back on this Triple Crown when I retire and smile. But for now my stats are for my kids to brag about and for the media-types who love talking about numbers."

To hit for a high average makes one a coveted ballplayer. To hit for power catches everyone's attention, too. But to do both -- and to do it better than anyone else -- that puts a player in a special class. Bobby Veach now belongs to that class.
The 30-year-old New York left fielder has won the Triple Crown, the 7th player in history to do it. He topped the Phoenix Baseball League in batting average (.377), home runs (45), and runs batted in (176).
His manager said, "Bobby is not only a special ballplayer, he's a special person. He handled all the media attention with class this year and never let it affect his play or the ballclub. I am really proud of him. It couldn't have happened to a better person."
